A deep house mix for the hours Berlin doesn't talk about.

Not peak time and not the obvious techno. The stretch where a floor is already fully in and needs less musical information rather than more.

Most of what gets filed under deep house is filed there for the wrong reason — because it is slower, or has a chord in it, or a saxophone. None of that is what the word is doing. What follows is the definition I actually work from, and the mix above is the argument in its own format.

Deep is not slow, and it is not jazzy

Deep describes construction, not tempo and not mood. Four things do most of the work: space left in the arrangement, where a lesser record would put another element; sub-bass carrying weight the mid-range deliberately does not; percussion cut back to what the groove actually needs; and harmonic movement small enough that you notice it late, or never, and only feel that something moved.

None of that requires a slow tempo. A record at 126 with three elements and a held chord is deeper than one at 118 with a jazz sample and eleven layers. The confusion comes from the fact that the reduced version is easier to hear at lower tempos, so the two travelled together and eventually got mistaken for each other.

The hours Berlin doesn't talk about

The city's reputation is built on the loud four hours — which is an export rather than a description, and the subject of its own guide. What that reputation leaves out is the stretch on either side of it, and particularly the one after: the room has already been given what it came for, nobody is arriving, nobody is leaving yet, and the floor is more committed than it was at any point when it was fuller.

That stretch is where this music belongs, and it travels badly — not because it is under-produced. Plenty of the parties working in this register are meticulous about room, sound and light, and some of the best lighting design in the city is pointed at floors playing exactly this. What does not travel is the shape of it. Three hours into a state is a duration, not a moment, and a clip is a poster rather than the work — there is no single second that carries what the hour was doing.

Which is most of why this part of a night is under-described rather than under-attended. For a lot of people who go out here regularly it is the reason they stayed.

Hypnosis by subtraction

Reduction is not an absence of ideas. It is what makes the ideas legible over an hour instead of over eight bars. Take enough out of a record and what is left has room to repeat without becoming irritating, and repetition that does not irritate is the entire mechanism — a room synchronises to a pulse whether or not anyone agreed to it, and the less that pulse is interrupted, the further it goes.

Which is also why the blends run long here. Two records with space in them can overlap for minutes rather than bars, and the interesting part is the third thing the overlap makes that neither track contains on its own. Selection and combination are the craft; in this register the combination does more of the work than either selection alone.

What deep means here

Hybrid Flight works under the claim Emotional Dancefloor Atmosphere, and deep is the register where that claim is easiest to keep — mood before genre, an arc rather than a run of tracks, and enough space in the material that the arc is audible at all. The dreamy end of this and why the same record plays differently five hours into a night are separate guides, as is what balearic actually means and why Ibiza's season shapes its music and what underground actually names, and what a booker is buying; this one is the mix.

The recorded work sits on Vacare Edition — Between Coasts was written between Andalusia, Ibiza and Berlin, which is a fair description of where the warmer end of this comes from. The two ends of a night have guides of their own — what daylight does to a floor and the blue hour as a technique. And the Codex is where the arguments behind all of it are made at length.

[Questions]

What does "deep" actually mean in deep house?

Not slow, not jazzy and not necessarily soulful, which are the three things it gets mistaken for. It describes how a track is built: space left in the arrangement, sub-bass carrying weight the mids do not, percussion reduced to what the groove needs, and harmonic movement small enough that you notice it late or not at all.

Why does deep house work better in a long set than at home?

Because its changes are small enough that they need time and context to register. Played cold, a track built on one held chord and a reduced groove reads as nothing happening. Played an hour into a set, to a room already in, the same track reads as the room finally being left alone.

What is the difference between deep house, minimal and hypnotic house?

Less than the labels suggest, and the overlap is where most of a night actually sits. Minimal describes how much is in the arrangement, hypnotic describes what repetition does over time, and deep describes the space and weight of the mix. A single track can honestly be all three.

When in a Berlin night does deep house belong?

Most often in the stretch after peak time has done its work and before the room empties, when a floor is fully committed and needs less musical information rather than more. It also works at the open, for the same reason in reverse.

What makes a good deep house blend?

Length. Two records with space in them can overlap for minutes rather than bars, and the interesting part is the third thing the overlap makes that neither track contains alone. Short cuts waste the one advantage this music has.
